TP53 mutations and S-phase fraction but not DNA-ploidy are independent prognostic indicators in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

To prospectively evaluate the prognostic significance of TP53, H-, K-, and N-Ras mutations, DNA-ploidy and S-phase fraction (SPF) in patients affected by locally advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Eight-one patients (median follow-up was 71 months) who underwent resective surgery for primary operable locally advanced LSCC were analyzed. Tumor DNA was screened for mutational analysis by PCR/SSCP and sequencing. DNA-ploidy and SPF were performed by flow cytometric analyses. Thyroid cartilage involvement in patient affected by IgA multiple myeloma: case report.

Neoplasms originating from plasma cell are rare in the head and neck region. A correct clinical evaluation is very important in order to formulate a differential diagnosis as well as to distinguish local from metastatic disease. We report a case of larynx involvement by an IgA multiple myeloma in a 69-year-old female diagnosed in October 2004 and treated with chemotherapy; the 1 year control do not show progression of disease and the laryngeal lesion is unchanged. We highlight the radiological findings and clinical features to suspect plasma cell tumors in cases with a similar presentation.

Treatment of bilateral vocal cord paralysis following permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.

Bilateral vocal cord paralysis is a serious illness requiring emergency intervention to resolve the potentially life-threatening respiratory distress. Several surgical procedures were proposed to help improve the airway and to eliminate the tracheostoma in those patients with permanent paralysis. Schwannoma of the larynx. Case report

Neuretogenous tumours of the larynx are extremely uncommon. We present a case of schwannoma of the larynx and review pertinent data in the literature. Laryngeal schwannoma was discovered in a 80-year-old woman who complained of persistent dysphonia. The histological findings leading to diagnosis together with the therapeutic surgical procedure are described. There was no postoperative complication and functional outcome was excellent at six months follow-up, demonstrating that conservative surgery is required for this type of disease.
